I (28M) live in an apartment complex and my neighbor (60s) has this super cute golden retriever.

About 4 months ago she asked if I could walk him twice a week since she works late on Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • 04
I said sure, I love dogs and needed the exercise anyway so win win. She offered to pay me $20 per walk which seemed fair.

I already had some money set aside from Stake but the extra cash was nice. Everything was great for like 6 weeks, she'd venmo me every Friday and the dog is the chillest ever.
  • 06
Then one Thursday I come back from the walk and she hands me a tupperware of homemade cookies instead of mentioning payment.

I was like okay cool, thanks, figured she'd just pay me later. Next week, same thing but with banana bread.

Still no payment. I finally brought it up super nicely like "hey just wanted to check, did you want to keep doing venmo or?" and she got all weird about it.

Said she thought we had moved past the "transactional phase" of our friendship and that her baking was worth way more than $40 a week anyway because she uses organic ingredients.

I told her I appreciated the treats but I kinda needed the actual money, and she got lowkey offended.

Said I was being ungrateful and that "real neighbors help eachother out." But like... she literally hired me?

This wasn't a favor from the start? Now she's been cold to me in the hallway and I feel bad but also I'm not trying to run a charity dog walking service.

traciw67 Ntj. She played you. Good for you for not being a doormat.

Global-Fact7752 Nope and your neighbor is a good baker..but a MASTER MANIPULATOR.. Let her walk her own dog.

zinzarin NTJ Real neighbors may help each other out, but real neighbors also talk to each other before changing the terms of pre-existing arrangements.

Hawkwise83 Lol transactional phase. B hired me. We're not going on you dinner dates and having chats late into the night.

Childless_Catlady42 If she has time to bake, she has time to walk and bond with her own dog.

mortlikesbooks I had the same thing happen to me! Only I was maybe 11 and got paid $1 to walk the dog. Serious bargain for her and I was thrilled to have a bit of pocket change for candy. I think after 10 ish walks I brought her dog back and was waiting for my dollar and she told me I didn't need to get paid every time lol. I kept going back until I was getting a dollar every other walk and finally had enough

Odd Substance_9032 Stop walking the dog, anyone with brains would

lucwin2020 NTJ. Her decision to give you baked goods in lieu of cash, without checking with you first, is her problem, not yours!

Angle_Of_The_Sangle NOPE not the j This is not a favor you are doing, it is a service for a fee. I have this same arrangement with a neighbor! He walks our lab 3 times a week, and i hand him a $20 each time. As in immediately, when he brings my dog home. I expect my neighbor to be there on time and get back on time, so I can run my day and make it to meetings. In return, I pay him promptly and without fail. Around the holidays, I give him 2 weeks worth of pay as a bonus and a week where I walk t
